Oil plays an important role in the overall function of a boat engine. Without oil, the engine and its components may overheat and degrade. In some cases, though, owners may notice a milky coloring in their oil. This is a troubling sign that needs to be addressed; otherwise, it could result in severe damage to the mechanical components.
But what exactly causes milky engine oil? And how do you fix it? Nine out of ten times, a milky color and consistency is an indicative sign of water in the oil. Inspect your engine gaskets to ensure they are solid and not leaking. Thankfully, gaskets are inexpensive and relatively easy to replace. Just take your boat to a marina or repair shop and show them the damaged gasket that needs replacing.
Of course, moisture may enter the oil through condensation, which is particularly problematic during the cool fall and winter months.
Assuming the condensation is minimal, you may be able to remove it by running the engine for minutes. As the engine heats up, it will evaporate some of the moisture. If the problem persists, chance the oil for a second time. This should remove the majority of moisture and other impurities lingering in the engine. There are some steps you can take to prevent your engine oil from turning milky, such as adding a stabilizer to it.
These products are designed to prolong the life of engine oil, discouraging moisture and other impurities from entering it. A good rule of thumb is to add a stabilizer to your engine oil when storing your boat for longer than one month. This problem is usually caused by water entering the oil, but you have to do some troubleshooting to find out where exactly the moisture is coming from. We are open and working our normal schedule.

If you let an oil-water emulsion sit for a long period will the two separate? Very important!! After craking sic it open slighty to see the oil drip out. If oil is like regular oil you are in good shape. I personnaly have been thru this problem before and it's no fun. If so, it won't be covered by warranty, but if the shaft is clean, they'll probably fix it for you.
I've got to say, it's not likely to have a warranty failure there with such a new engine. The lube is an amber brown color going in. My experience with Evinrude OEM and Mercury OEM gear oils is that they are all dark blue going in, and coming out at the end of the season are nearly black, with the expected small amount of metal shavings on the magnetic tip of the bottom plug.
I've always been told to search for any variation in this pattern as a cause for concern. That happened to me. I assumed the worst, pulled off my lower unit with the intention of checking and replacing the seals. When I pessure tested it, the only leak was in the top drain plug. Everytime you remove the screws, you should replace the gaskets.

The gears inside your lower unit are constantly turning, and the only protection they have is the lower unit lubricant you use. Its job is to form a micro-thin film between the metal component parts to keep them from actually touching. Under the large loads these gears exert, proper lubrication requires extreme resistance to pressure, foaming and molecular shear.
And, since the lower unit operates underwater, its lubricant also has to be capable of maintaining necessary lubricity even when a significant amount of water is present, should some leak inside.
Visually inspect the exterior of your lower unit for any signs of damage every time before you go out. If found, visually inspect the propshaft seals for damage or leakage.
Allow a small amount to drain into a clean container. Have the lower unit seals inspected by your Yamaha Marine dealer through a pressure test, and if necessary, have the seals replaced. Pressure testing a lower unit is best performed by an authorized Yamaha Marine dealer, because depending on findings, it may be necessary to disassemble the lower unit for further inspection. The resulting fine bubbles might be confused with the milky appearance that occurs with water ingestion. Yamaha recommends replacing your lower unit lubricant after the first 20 hours for a new outboard, then every hours after that.
To do it yourself, place a pan under the bottom drain screw, remove the screw, and then remove the upper vent screw on the side of the lower unit. Allow all of the lubricant to drain into the pan. Fine metallic dust is normal, but if you find larger chips of metal on the screw or in the pan as the lubricant drains, have your local Yamaha Marine dealer check for possible internal damage. Use a pick to pull it free, as these must be located, discarded, and replaced each time these screws are removed.
Tip: These drain screw crush washers serve as gaskets and are not reuseable. They are a main source of protection against water intrusion into the lower unit, which can cause catastrophic dilution of the lubricant. Do NOT try to save a few pennies here. Lower units are very expensive. Once all the lube has drained, refill the lower unit by threading the appropriate fitting into the lower unit drain screw opening on the bottom of the bullet and slowly pumping in fresh Yamalube Marine Gearcase Lube or Lubricant HD.
Once you see this new fluid seeping out of the upper vent screw hole, stop and wait 5 minutes, then very slowly continue pumping until it seeps from the vent screw again.
At this point, replace the vent screw with a new crush washer installed, and tighten according to manufacturer specifications. Remove the fitting attached to the drain screw opening, and quickly re-install the drain screw with the new crush washer installed. Tighten to factory specifications.
You may choose to do these procedures yourself, or you can have your authorized Yamaha Marine dealer do them for you. Either way, performing them is important for proper continued operation and your continued satisfaction and enjoyment.

Changing the plugs and the lower gear oil yearly is best. There are two flat head screw heads on the lower unit, an upper one for filling and a lower one for draining. Be sure to use marine grade lower unit oil not just regular gear oil. To change the lower unit oil in a Yamaha four stroke one must obtain proper parts, the proper tools, and instructions on how to properly take apart and put together the parts.
The oil sending unit is typically located in the lower section of the engine block and drops down into the oil pan. May also be referred to as the oil pickup. If you remove the oil pan, you can't miss it. That would be moisture in the oil.
